Thursday 17 April - The Vampires + The World According To James

$20/$15 BOOK TIX

These two like-minded quartets are like kindred spirits, making this one-off double bill a night of rare music . The World According to James is a well established band on the local scene, led by the exuberant James Greening. The Vampires are hot off the back of a national tour, promoting their critically acclaimed fourth album ‘Tiro’. Come bid farewell to the Vampires as they head to Germany to perform in Berlin and at the prestigious Jazzahead Festival/Showcase!

The Vampires

Jeremy Rose – alto/tenor/soprano saxophone, clarinet

Nick Garbett – trumpet

Noel Mason – bass

Alex Masso – drums

The Vampires' music builds on the rich history of piano-less jazz quartets with a unique twist, adopting reggae, balkan, afrobeat and latin rhythms in unexpected ways. The dual saxophone and trumpet melodic lines have a strong sense of dialogue and emotional range – from exciting to soothing. The band draws on many influences, but have been compared to the likes of early Ornette Coleman, the catholics, Bob Marley and John Zorn/Dave Douglas’ Masada.

Wednesday 23 April - Sun Rai w Ben Vanderwal supported by Zane Carney (John Mayer Band)

$15/$10 BOOK TIX

LA blog 'Filter Magazine' said about one of Sun Rai’s new tunes: 'A jam hasn't made us feel this inexplicably giddy and unstoppable—like we could walk on water, hop across clouds, or pull some real-life Super Mario Bros. shit, like jump on flying turtles and collect gold coins—since Phoenix’s "If I Ever Feel Better.”

For a selected run of Aussie dates in April, Rai will team up with uber-talented drummer Ben Vanderwal, in support of their fresh new duo EP, aptly and off-beatly titled ‘Escargot.' Expect some serious musical telepathy at the live show and a healthy dose of improvisation - within the oh-so-groovy framework of Rai's jazz infused vocals, Mr Vanderwal’s intricate beats, not to mention some gratuitous left hand synth bass action!

Rai Thistlethwayte, aka Sun Rai - is a one of Australia’s most respected musical talents: a highly accomplished pianist, guitarist, vocalist and songwriter.

As front-man of multi-platinum selling rock band Thirsty Merc, he has had 5 ARIA nominations, toured extensively and released a string of self-penned hits in the Australian Music Charts. As a songwriter he has been nominated for APRA Song of The Year.

Rai has also performed in a number of jazz combos, with artists including ARIA award-winning guitarist James Muller, U.S. jazz bassist Christian McBride (Sting, Wynton Marsalis band) Tenor Saxophonist Dale Barlow (Art Blakey's jazz  messengers) and multi?award-winning bassist Phil Stack. More recently, Rai’s songwriting talents have been tapped by accomplished recording artists and songwriters overseas including Hip Hop/RnB superstar Akon.

Ben Vanderwal is one of the most in demand Jazz drummers in Australia. He has played with John Scofield, Charlie Haden, Howard Levey, Madeleine Peyroux, James Morrison, Chris Potter, George Garzone, Kate Ceberano, Mark Murphy, Ernie Watts, Lionel Rose, David Campbell, Rhonda Birchmore, Nigel Kennedy, Don Burrows, Deborah Byrne and Normie Rowe. In 2011 and 2012 Ben toured with the Tim Minchin vs. Orchestra production performing with each Australian city's Symphony Orchestra.

A long time fan of drummer Ben Vanderwal, Rai bumped into Ben at Sydney jazz venue 505 in December 2013 after one of Ben’s gigs and the two decided to collaborate. The result was a 5 track duo EP entitled ‘Escargot’ after a 2 day recording session at Sound Baker studios in Perth, helmed by producer/engineer Rob Agostini. Recorded almost entirely live, and employing a large amount of improvisation, the EP’s tone reflects the musical personalities of the musicians involved: intricate, off beat and at times tongue-in-cheek.

'Sun Rai featuring Ben Vanderwal - Escargot' is due for a mid-march 2014 release.

The duo will also tour nationally Australia in selected venues in April 2014. Audiences can expect a fun night of off-beat, jazz infused songs with a healthy dose of groove and spontaneity.

After two sell out performances earlier this year the remarkable and show stopping dancer   Johnny Tedesco, from Melbourne's Arte Kanela, returns with the unique and equally jaw dropping Bandaluzia Flamenco for ONE NIGHT ONLY.!
