Having already lived half a life of incredible music making and with fans all over the globe, Australians are catching up with the obscenely talented Lionel Cole.

Lionel Cole's lifelong involvement with the music industry is characterized by innovation, passion, and diversity. Starting out as a gigging piano bar player in Chicago to later working composing for Hollywood feature films and collaborations with artists ranging from Mariah Carey to Robert Downey Jnr, Joss Stone and Rickie Lee Jones. And most recently Lionel's creativity has been focused in work with longtime writing partner and Grammy award winner, Randy Jackson.

Born to a name synonymous with breaking down a variety of barriers, Lionel has carried on the family tradition and made inroads of his own. Uncle Nat King Cole obliterated the colour line, cousin Natalie defines pop longevity, and Grammy nominated father Freddy proves one is never too old to be an overnight success.

Lionel has always figured it's the music that does the work. It's the music that changes hearts, opens minds and makes us feel. Lionel Cole believes in music that moves the listener to feel. He does whatever is conceivable to that end. For him that's what music is about. This is what Lionel is about.

$10 BOOK NOW

Buy Tix on the door from 6pm

Roscoe James Irwin is a traveller, marrying his experiences to his music, drawing on his solo adventures in some of the world’s most remote and interesting locations as fuel for this personal project that showcases his complex musical capabilities.

He is taking to the road this month to share his new EP, ‘The Wild’. This is his latest offering, and is overflowing with lush orchestral colours, layered on folk pop melodies washed with ambient electronic sounds. The “long haired multi-instrumental wonder”, at times performing as a one-man band, “delivers his songs unashamedly and note-perfect”. - The Ripe, Leah Phillips.

To celebrate the launch of ‘The Wild’ Roscoe has put together a unique line up of Australia’s best musicians, and special guests to share his music in each city. Roscoe’s core band will feature Ben Edgar (Gotye/Missy Higgins) on guitar, and Danny Farrugia (Angus & Julia/Tinpan Orange) on Drums. Sydney will be treated to special guest and Jazz legend Emma Pask, and support from local songstress Elana Stone.

Thursday 28 May - Abi Tucker & Julian Curwin ‘The Falling Seeds’ Album Launch

$15 BOOK NOW

Tix on the door from 6pm

The Falling Seeds is a collaboration between Abi Tucker and Julian Curwin. After a chance meeting in an East Sydney pub, the pair started writing together, culminating in a self-recorded album, then mixed by respected singer songwriter and recording engineer Brian Campeau. The album tells something of a fantasy story through its 10 songs, which traverse a variety of genres, helped along by the percussion of Jess Ciampa and the brass of Simon Ferenci.

Abi Tucker is a singer, songwriter, actor and writer who has contributed to various projects in TV, film and stage. Abi has had a career spanning two decades in both music and acting, including the release of two independent records Dreamworld (2003) and One December Moon (2008), roles in The Secret Life Of Us, Wildside, Heartbreak High, The Wog Boy, McLeod’s Daughters, in which some of her songs are featured, and ABC’s Playschool. Abi is currently performing in the Bell Shakespeare production of ‘As You Like It’ at the Sydney Opera House Playhouse.

Julian Curwin is a composer and multi-instrumentalist who works in a number of different and varied projects. He leads The Tango Saloon, a blend of tango with spaghetti western (among other things) – the band has released four albums, the 2006 self-titled debut via US label Ipecac Recordings, followed by Transylvania (2008), Shadows & Fog (2012) and Suspicion (2015). Julian can also be seen playing around town with The Mango Balloon, Baby et Lulu, The Fantastic Terrific Munkle and Darth Vegas.

The debut album for The Falling Seeds is distributed digitally by Xelon Entertainment through label Kellett Street Records.

"Damian Wright is a brilliant flamenco guitarist...Wright showed what a captivating solo player he is on his own "In Time", and elsewhere his articulation of complex lines was fluid and dripping with conviction" - John Shand, Sydney Morning Herald.

“The opening piece, Oceania (Wright) exemplified how the singings primal rawness contrast with the guitars lyrical refinement, while Statham’s dancing bridged the two, from the graceful elegance of her arm movement to the furious rhythmic precision of her footwork....Hunter gave a rapturous solo introduction to Khyal (Wright) before slipping into another groove with Hauptmann behind another dazzling improvisation by Wright.” John Shand SMH 17/09/12 John Shand

Wednesday 10 June - Reinier Baas & The More Socially Relevant Jazz Music Ensemble

$20 BOOK NOW

Guitarist and composer Reinier Baas (1985, Hilversum, The Netherlands) is one of the leading young figures in the Dutch jazz scene today.

An active bandleader, he has been in charge of ‘The More Socially Relevant Jazz Music Ensemble’ since 2010. The quintet is deemed “the hippest and most exciting Jazz band of the Netherlands’”(Volksrant). Their irreverent nature, slightly disturbing visual language involving goats and shower scenes and their unique brand of ‘mostly improvised instrumental indie music’ earned them the prestigious Edison Award in 2013. According to their press kit, ‘the quintet seeks to unify indie, contemporary classical and improvised music, without boring its audience to death in the process. Their influences range from Brahms to Coltrane and Kendrick Lamar to the Arctic Monkeys and their compositions from the intricate and sophisticated to the downright danceable.’

Saxophone guru Benjamin Herman wrote a column about the ‘Ensemble’ entitled ‘A hund- red times better than we were back then’.

“Here, you hear the future of jazz.” - PAROOL!

Baas’ latest project ‘Smooth Jazz Apocalypse’ further proves the Amsterdam native’s knack for tit- les. Smooth Jazz Apocalypse is the extended version of the quintet, featuring pianist Harmen Fraanje and bass clarinetist Joris Roelofs. The record ‘Smooth Jazz Apocalypse’, Reinier Baas’ third, was released on Mainland Records on April 5th 2014. Apart from the septet, it features clas- sical pianist Helena Basilova in a piece for solo piano.!

“The new group of Reinier Baas is a true revelation.” - JAZZENZO!

“Apart from the hideous cover art, there is nothing to dislike about Smooth Jazz Apocalyp- se.” - JAZZISM *****

Reinier Baas graduated from the Conservatory of Amsterdam in 2010 with a 10/10, spending part of his studies at the Manhattan School of Music in New York. Since, he has performed at venues such as the North Sea Jazz Festival, 12 points Festival, Lowlands, Bimhuis, Concertgebouw, Un- terfahrt and many more. As a soloist, he has performed with the Metropole Orchestra, National Youth Orchestra and the National Youth Jazz Orchestra. As a side man, he has played with amongst others Gregory Porter, Chris Speed, Benjamin Herman, Nederlands Blazers Ensemble, Ben van Gelder quintet, Hans Teeuwen and Jesse van Ruller. He is a member of the New Rotter- dam Jazz Orchestra, and a teacher at the conservatories of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Ensche- de.

Both have travelled the globe entertaining and performing at the highest level and though not house hold names anymore, take it from us, these two are as bad ass as they ever were. Friday 19 June - Dave Goodman Quartet

$20/$15 BOOK NOW

Jazz critic John Clare has described Dave Goodman as ‘one of the leading drummers in the country’ and ‘[one of] the most intriguing drummers recording anywhere’. At just eighteen, Dave received an invitation to join the renowned Mike Nock Quartet and, at twenty, came second in the prestigious National Jazz Awards. Today, having worked with a long list of Australian and international luminaries - including Joe Lovano, Bob Berg, Bernie McGann, James Morrison, Don Burrows, Vince Jones, Ten Part Invention and Mark Isaacs - he is, undoubtedly, one of Australia’s most important jazz drummers.

Tonight Dave proudly launches the new Dave Goodman Quartet, for which he has been composing pieces for a handpicked selection of his favourite musicians, namely Peter Koopman (guitar), Matt McMahon (piano) and Cameron Undy (double bass).

‘I'm excited to be launching my new quartet at Venue 505,’ says Dave. ‘This combination of players feels perfect to me. The first time we played together was as magical and mystical as though it were a dream come true. I think Australian jazz audiences have been waiting to hear a voice like Peter Koopman on the guitar. He has such a sweet sound and his inventiveness is individual. I'm sure Matt McMahon and Cameron Undy are not unfamiliar to listeners. They've been friends and colleagues of mine for nearly 20 years, and I’m very pleased to entrust them with my new music at this time.’

Saturday 20 June - Arrebato Ensemble

$20 BOOK NOW

Arrebato Ensemble is a diverse group of talented musicians who have worked together to develop original music with contemporary flamenco as the compositional and rhythmic driving force. This collaboration has created a passionately moving style of music with an intensely international flavour and appeal to many audiences from the flamenco aficionado to jazz and world music fans.

Their recordings and performances have received significant critical acclaim across the board . Prominent Music Critic and Reviewer, John Shand wrote in the Sydney Morning Herald that their music "moves from pure flamenco in favour of a more contemporary style, the spirit, a dramatic, sexually charged and haughty sadness remains intact." The Ensemble was voted Best World Music Artist at the 2008 MusicOz Awards.
