OCTOBER 2014

Friday 17 October - Grant Arthur Cautionary Tales Album Launch with The Cope Street Parade

$15 BOOK TIX

A young man of singular style, Grant Arthur is perhaps best known as the characterful and inventive musician behind that most outlandish kind of debut opus, a Christmas album (A Very Grant Arthur Christmas, Yum Yum Tree 2012). Kind and sanguine by nature, Grant is a friend and agent to a motley crew of instruments including trombone, bass trumpet, sousaphone, tuba, banjo, dobro, steel guitar and bass guitar. He is also an arresting singer and songwriter, lending his voice and pen to most of the ensembles he performs with.

Grant is Currently touring the world with the jaw-dropping circus show Limbo, showcasing his musical talents alongside a cast of highly skilled International performers every night.  This year he too a break from his carny lifestyle to record an album of original music with a group of Australian musicians who by chance all happened to be passing through foggy London town at the same time.  These songs are light hearted words of warning inspired by Australian folklore, family and circus life, spinning tales of murder, matches and giant mosquitoes.  The band tears their way through New Orleans stomps, barn dances and funeral marches with some of the best young musicians in Sydney strutting their stuff.

The night will feature the music from Cautionary Tales as well as an early Christmas celebration as the cult hit album A Very Grant Arthur Christmas is brought to life once more on the stage.

With Support by The Cope Street Parade and featuring a few special guest cast members from the smash hit show Limbo, this will be a night not to miss!

$15 BOOK TIX

Alex Stuart returns from Paris to Australia, accompanied by four great Australian jazz musicians, to launch his new album Place to Be.

His Australian tour follows the French launch in May at Paris’s iconic Sunset Jazz Club. Already, France’s Nouvelle-Vague magazine has described Place to Be as ‘balanced to perfection … one of the best jazz albums of the year’ and awarded it 5 out of 5 stars, while Alex Dutilh from radio station France Musique has described it as ‘an absolutely suberb album’ and featured it on the station’s ‘Open Jazz’ program. In Australia, Place to Be was ABC Jazz’s feature album and received 4 out 5 stars in John McBeath’s review in The Australian.

Alex’s Australian band is:

Alex Stuart – guitar

Julien Wilson – saxophone

Miroslav Bukovsky – trumpet

Jonathan Zwartz – bass

James Hauptmann – drums

Place to Be is an ‘ode to cultural openness’, with Alex finding inspiration in many places. These include the jazz tradition, contemporary jazz, African and South American grooves, rock and post-rock, Indian and Balkan music, Australia, the sea and surfing, life in Paris’ 19th arrondissement and much more.

Thursday 23 October -  'Two for the Road" Johnny Nicol Supper Club with Lynn Rogers

$20/$15 BOOK TIX

Johnny Nicol and Lynn were house hold names here in Australia for a few decades back when your Ma and Pa use to go out dancing and drinking and painting the town. In the days when Jazz was a party sound that brought people out to meet friends and let there hair down on a weekend. Both have travelled the globe entertaining and performing at the highest level and though not house hold names anymore, take it from us, these two are as bad ass as they ever were. It’s true that great musicians just get greater with age like a perfectly bottled wine or whiskey. Come hear two remarkable performers with a sensational rhythm team backing for a night of cutting edge nostalgia.

Friday 24 October - MOUSSA DIAKITE (Mali) + WASSADO Band

Special Guest PAPE MBAYE (Senegal)  BOOK TIX

$15

Moussa Diakite was part of Mali's generation of pioneering musicians in the 1970s and ‘80s. Composing and performing music heavily influenced by the Wassoulou styles of his homelands in southwestern Mali. Moussa joined the ‘Super Rail Band de Bamako’ as it's lead guitarist in 1979, also playing with the legendary Toumani Diabate's ‘Yanga Orchestre’ and  eventually joined world music star Salif Keita from 1987-1992. Since moving to Sydney in 1992, Moussa has inspired the Australian African music scene.

Diakite is collaborating with one of West Africa's most influential musicians of the last 40 years, Djelimady Tounkara along with prominent contemporary star and recent Grammy nominee Bassekou Kouyate. Joining these luminaries is one of Australia's emerging instrumentalists, Simon Olsen who is first generation Australian from Mali.

Together they are due to record an album in the modern Malian style, translating traditional 'Wassoulou' music from Southwestern Mali, combining modern instruments with traditional instruments. This project will facilitate a significant moment of cultural exchange and reconnection for all musicians involved. Moussa will return to his native homeland Bamako to record with his countrymen for the first time since he left the international touring circuit 21 years ago. Join us for a special performance and preview of Diakite’s original works prior to this unique collaboration and homecoming.

Performing alongside of him will be his band ‘WASSADO” comprised of:

Len Semperi - Guitar

Simon Olsen - Bass

Ben Kidson - Drums

Special guest PAPE MBAYE played with Nationally acclaimed bands: Jaboot, Ndiew, Super Ndiew, Natangue, Super Sabor,
In '86-'90 Mbaye had a residency in Studio 2000 as a session musician. After touring stints in Finland, France and Australia during the 1990's, Mbaye decided to call Sydney his second home in 1999. Mbaye is a master in the realm of all things percussion and has a musicality that can only emanate from the rich cultural traditions of his ancestral heritage - that of a Griot. As a custodian of rich oral tradition, Pape has been head drummer of his Village, Yoff for 25 years.

During this time, Mbaye was appointed to play for high political officials, elections and welcoming parties for the president and was ordained to play for traditional healing and spiritual ceremonies.

Thursday 30 October - Andrew Gander Quartet + Cameron Undy Quartet

$15/$10 BOOK TIX

830pm Andy Gander Quartet plays odd-meter grooves based in jazz, afro-cuban and funk idioms, polymetric improvisational interplay, free-form improvisation and hard-grooving traditional approaches to the music. The selections are Gander originals as well as some arrangements of standard Jazz tunes. Designed as vehicles for exploration of the group's rhythmic interactive processes featuring all four members as strong soloists and ensemble players.

Carl Morgan - Guitar

Steve Barry - Piano

Brett Hirst - Bass

Andrew Gander - Drums

"In a Festival line-up luminescent with musical wonders, I can unreservedly say the Andrew Gander Band was the highlight for me – and I am sure many there would agree. His five-piece group hit their jaw-dropping stride from the first note and ascended from there. Gander seemed to push each of them into the deeper reaches of their own musical universe” (John Hardaker)

10pm Cameron Undy Quartet features a marvellous chemistry in an early and very exciting stage of development. Undy has not had a featured acoustic group for more than a decade and the music composed here is both challenging and uplifting. The extraordinary and unique drumming of Andrew Gander gives rise to new possibilities for the virtuosity of Greg Coffins piano and the fluidity of Laskowski’s tenor saxophone.

This will be an extra special performance as it is Peter and Carl’s first gig back after stealing the show at the National Jazz Awards Competition at The Wangaratta Jazz Festival. Perhaps they will even bring their trophies?

Riffs shall be playing, sweat will be pouring, sticks may be breaking, pedals must be stamping, fingers could be bleeding, black shirts we’ll be wearing, horns shall be rising, strings will be D-tuning, ballads we’ll be ignoring, gain dials should be turning, subs will be shaking, jazz police handcuffs may be tightening, neighbours could be complaining, Cameron will probably be grimacing and Tim’s wife could even go into labour.

Black t-shirts with metal bands logos are strongly advised!
