Wednesday 23 April - Sun Rai w Ben Vanderwal supported by Zane Carney (John Mayer Band)

$15/$10 BOOK TIX

LA blog 'Filter Magazine' said about one of Sun Rai’s new tunes: 'A jam hasn't made us feel this inexplicably giddy and unstoppable—like we could walk on water, hop across clouds, or pull some real-life Super Mario Bros. shit, like jump on flying turtles and collect gold coins—since Phoenix’s "If I Ever Feel Better.”

For a selected run of Aussie dates in April, Rai will team up with uber-talented drummer Ben Vanderwal, in support of their fresh new duo EP, aptly and off-beatly titled ‘Escargot.' Expect some serious musical telepathy at the live show and a healthy dose of improvisation - within the oh-so-groovy framework of Rai's jazz infused vocals, Mr Vanderwal’s intricate beats, not to mention some gratuitous left hand synth bass action!

Rai Thistlethwayte, aka Sun Rai - is a one of Australia’s most respected musical talents: a highly accomplished pianist, guitarist, vocalist and songwriter.

As front-man of multi-platinum selling rock band Thirsty Merc, he has had 5 ARIA nominations, toured extensively and released a string of self-penned hits in the Australian Music Charts. As a songwriter he has been nominated for APRA Song of The Year.

Rai has also performed in a number of jazz combos, with artists including ARIA award-winning guitarist James Muller, U.S. jazz bassist Christian McBride (Sting, Wynton Marsalis band) Tenor Saxophonist Dale Barlow (Art Blakey's jazz  messengers) and multi?award-winning bassist Phil Stack. More recently, Rai’s songwriting talents have been tapped by accomplished recording artists and songwriters overseas including Hip Hop/RnB superstar Akon.

Ben Vanderwal is one of the most in demand Jazz drummers in Australia. He has played with John Scofield, Charlie Haden, Howard Levey, Madeleine Peyroux, James Morrison, Chris Potter, George Garzone, Kate Ceberano, Mark Murphy, Ernie Watts, Lionel Rose, David Campbell, Rhonda Birchmore, Nigel Kennedy, Don Burrows, Deborah Byrne and Normie Rowe. In 2011 and 2012 Ben toured with the Tim Minchin vs. Orchestra production performing with each Australian city's Symphony Orchestra.

A long time fan of drummer Ben Vanderwal, Rai bumped into Ben at Sydney jazz venue 505 in December 2013 after one of Ben’s gigs and the two decided to collaborate. The result was a 5 track duo EP entitled ‘Escargot’ after a 2 day recording session at Sound Baker studios in Perth, helmed by producer/engineer Rob Agostini. Recorded almost entirely live, and employing a large amount of improvisation, the EP’s tone reflects the musical personalities of the musicians involved: intricate, off beat and at times tongue-in-cheek.

'Sun Rai featuring Ben Vanderwal - Escargot' is due for a mid-march 2014 release.

The duo will also tour nationally Australia in selected venues in April 2014. Audiences can expect a fun night of off-beat, jazz infused songs with a healthy dose of groove and spontaneity.

Award-winning Sydney-based singer-songwriter, Caitlin Park, is proud to introduce her highly anticipated sophomore longplayer, The Sleeper.

‘The Sleeper’ illustrates an exciting progression taking the musical elements for which she is known and loved for – the intricate tapestry of acoustic folk and electronica, film nostalgia, sampled sounds, intelligent lyricism, abstract structures – and expands them into a larger, even more immersive sonic landscape.

In 2011, Caitlin released her critically acclaimed debut album Milk Annual, establishing her as one of Australia’s most innovative songwriters. She has also shared the stage with Active Child, First Aid Kit, James Vincent McMorrow, Sam Amidon, Big Scary and Thelma Plum.

The Sleeper sees Caitlin truly progress as a songwriter and performer – embracing bold, pop musicality and higher production levels – but at all times finding beauty in simple moments and sounds, building and layering until a sonic landscape takes form.

“There’s something about the way she makes you think she’s drifting – when in fact the Sydneysider is nailing each song firmly”

Bernard Zuel, SMH

Thursday 22 May - On The Stoop plus Fat Yahoozah.

$15/$10 BOOK TIX

On The Stoop

Romance, anguish, exuberance, insanity and a overdose of caffeine inform this collection of vaudeville tunes performed by some fantastic Sydney musicians.

A front man on the accordion, three blasting horns, a kick ass rhythm section and a reputation for dangerous, iconoclastic music personify this group.

The music of On The Stoop is a tangle of raucous Balkan, Cumbia, Folk with a punk sensibility.

On The Stoop has performed all over the country at events including The Woodford Folk Festival and The City Of Sydney Rocks Festival to name a few.

The band has recently come off the back of playing some fantastic gigs, including a successful tour to Melbourne playing venues such as Open Studio. Their first full length album is in the works and is due for release mid September this year.

Fat Yahoozah

“World music” is an overused term, and we also feel kind of awkward that collectively we're at least 78% white, so we won't use it. After all, all music is from the world, right? Ever heard alien music? This is not that. We are, however, comfortable with telling you that this music is meant for dancing, so we'd like you do to that. We'd like it.... a lot.

Ellen Kirkwood - trumpet

Ruth Wells - saxophones

Simon Ferenci - trombone

Josh "Lampy" Ahearn - euphonium

Friday 23 May - Inga Liljestrom and full band + Matt Tonks

$25/$20 BOOK TIX

\

INGA LILJESTROM with FULL BAND with support Matt Tonks.

featuring Veronique Serret, Zoe Hauptmann, Evan Mannell,  Haydn Walker, Jonathan Zwartz.

“A voice poisonous and addictive...everything this artist touches turns to gold.  What emerges is a sensation that continues to escape being on familiar ground, well marked and at the same time to cross the world for someone extraordinary in every sense of the word. A real discovery.” (Ukhan Kizmiaz, Core and Co, France)

Inga returns to Australia after two years from her homeland celebrating the release of her album 'Two Dangers', and previews new songs from an exciting upcoming release with

award winning film composer, Michael Lira. This will be Inga's only concerts with the full band in Sydney. The night will also feature two amazing bass players!

Based in Paris for the last 5 years, recording and performing her original music and selling out shows throughout Europe. She has also supported  Amanda Palmer, Goldfrapp and Sinead Oconnor. Known in theses parts for her collaborations with The Church, D.I.G, and Gerling's hit single 'Dust Me Selecta'. She has sung and written for television and feature films, including the promo for both series 1 and 2 of 'Dracula' on Sky TV in the UK with head writer Daniel Knauf (creator of HBO series 'Carnivale'). Her vocals also feature on Australian productions 'Blood Brothers' and 'Rake'.

Her first commercially released album 'Elk' received critical acclaim and album of the week in many magazines and radio stations throughout Australia , as did her second commercially released album 'Black Crow Jane' in France. Her latest album release 'Two Dangers' is more acoustic and stripped back, featuring resophonic guitars, banjos, burnished horns, spooky musical saws, violins, creaky boards and dusty boots. The songs are a mix of traditional folk (Katie Cruel, Black is the Colour), a song by Melanie Safka (Some Say I Got Devil), and original songs influenced by Appalachian mountain music and a touch of '50s romance…a refuge for broken hearts and lonely nights, music to accompany a vision of old abandoned wooden houses, tattered and torn curtains flapping in the humid breeze, the feelings of pining for a lover, sitting on the rickety verandah, singing to the sunset on hot dry days and star clad nights...

Support by Matt Tonks.

Taking audiences to an often unexpected world of mesmerising, spontaneous sound. In a hybrid steel string, flamenco inspired finger-style attack, Matt's guitar is at times organically looped.  In 2013/14 Matt has returned to Europe and the US, playing solo shows at Ronnie Scotts, London, Paris, Los Angeles (The House of Blues), Austin and Nashville.  He is a winner of Drum Media Alternative Artist of the Year (MusicOz) and was recently included on the ABC Music release "Under the Covers - Seductive sounds for a late late night". His releases include  The Heavy Yen Project (Album 2012),  Islands of String & Skin (Album 2011), Eat Yourself (Album 2008), Blanket (EP 2008), Synaesthesia (Album 2007).

QUOTES

Sydney based sibling duo, Hannah and Josh bring a soulful, fun and fresh acoustic sound to the City's scene. With easy to relate to songs about life, love and all the magic and mayhem in between, the duo presents a powerful message of hope to an increasingly hopeless world.

Hannah and Josh perform their mongrel mix of blues, folk and indie-rock with light, life and a whole lot of groove.

Whilst 2014 remains a quieter year of planning and preparation, Hannah and Josh look forward to the musical releases, tours and shows that are ahead.
